Where Lubbock's South Side Meets the Farms

Tree Service in Woodrow covers a mix of property types. Woodrow is an unincorporated community on US 87 about ten miles south of Lubbock, with State Highway Loop 493 passing through. Its schools belong to Lubbock-Cooper ISD, and Lubbock-Cooper South Elementary is in the community. Properties around it range from farmsteads with old trees to homes with young plantings, and each needs a different kind of attention.

Named for a president

Woodrow was founded in the 1910s and named for President Woodrow Wilson. Locals debated calling it Wilson, but a town in neighboring Lynn County already had that name. The first school went up in 1917, and the Cooper School was started in 1936 as a combined elementary and high school. In the late 1980s, the community had four churches, a cotton gin, a general store and about 25 homes.

A hail corridor

Woodrow shows up again and again in National Weather Service hail reports. On May 1, 2024, hail of 1.25 inches fell two miles south-southwest of Woodrow and 1.5 inches two miles northwest. On June 5, 2025, hail up to 2.5 inches fell four miles north-northwest, and hail broke windows and a skylight in Woodrow itself. In August 2025, a 62 mph gust was measured five miles north-northwest of town.

Young trees and hail

Young trees with thin bark take hail damage harder than old trees. A hailstorm can tear bark off a small trunk in strips, and a young tree with much of its trunk wounded may not recover. If you have new trees and a storm just came through, look closely at the side of the trunk that faced the storm. Small nicks will heal. Large patches of missing bark mean it's time to talk about replanting.

Older trees on farmsteads

On older country properties around Woodrow, the trees are often big and close to the house, planted when shade mattered more than spacing. These trees may have deadwood high in the crown, limbs resting on roofs, or roots heaving sidewalks and slabs. Pruning or removing them takes planning and the right rigging so nothing lands on the house.

Woodrow tree work

  • Hail and wind damage cleanup
  • Removal of dead or hazardous trees
  • Limb clearance over roofs, drives and fences
  • Stump grinding

Wind on open ground

South of Lubbock the land is wide open, and trees around Woodrow homes take wind from every direction as fronts and storms pass. Crown thinning and shortening long limbs cut the leverage that wind has on a tree. It is routine work, and it is far cheaper than removing a split tree after the fact.

Woodrow Questions

Is Woodrow inside your service area?

Yes. Woodrow is about ten miles south of Lubbock on US 87 and is part of the area we serve, including acreage and farmsteads nearby.

Hail damaged my young trees. Should I replace them?

It depends on how much bark was torn off the trunk. Small wounds heal. If large patches are missing, especially around much of the trunk, replanting is usually the better investment.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Woodrow?

Woodrow is unincorporated, so city tree rules don't apply. If you live in a subdivision with an HOA, check its covenants before removing front-yard trees.

Do you grind stumps on acreage?

Yes. We grind single stumps in yards and multiple stumps on larger properties. Grinding goes below grade so the area can be leveled, mowed or replanted, and the grindings can be hauled off or left as mulch.

Can you clear limbs over a long country driveway?

Yes. We raise and trim limbs along drives so trucks, trailers and emergency vehicles can pass, and we chip the brush as we go.
