Smyer and the June 2025 Tornadoes
For Tree Service in Smyer, June 5, 2025 is the date people remember. That evening, two tornadoes touched down near town. The National Weather Service rated the first EF-1, with 110 mph winds over a 3.7-mile path, and the second EF-2, with 130 mph winds over 3.35 miles. A West Texas Mesonet station at Smyer recorded a 109 mph gust, and power poles were snapped four miles northeast. Two people were injured.
Not the first time
Smyer was founded in 1924 and platted in 1925 as a Santa Fe railroad stop halfway between Levelland and Lubbock. In 1929, a tornado destroyed much of the young town, and residents rebuilt it. It incorporated in 1963 and had 441 residents in 2020. The trees around Smyer's homes have all been planted since then, and like any planted tree on open plains, they take whatever the weather sends.
Hail on top of wind
The spring before the tornadoes, on April 25, 2025, baseball-size hail, 2.75 inches across, fell three miles north of town, with 2-inch hail a mile north and reports of hail damage to houses. Hail that size can strip a tree, break branches and tear bark. Trees that took both the hail and the June winds may have hidden damage that only shows up when they leaf out the next year.
After a tornado: tree triage
- Trees with a snapped trunk or a torn-out root plate need removal
- Trees that lost one or two major limbs can sometimes be saved with corrective pruning
- Trees stripped of leaves but structurally sound usually recover
- Hanging limbs and leaning trees near houses come first
- Debris tangled in branches should come out before it falls
How we handle storm cleanup in Smyer
We start with the most dangerous items: trees on roofs, limbs hanging over doors and drives, and anything leaning toward a structure. Lines get reported to the utility before we cut near them. Then we work through the rest of the property, separating what can be saved from what has to go, and we give you a written estimate before the work starts.
Everyday work, too
Not every call is a storm. We also prune Smyer yard trees, remove dead ones, clear limbs off roofs and grind old stumps.
A word on trees that look fine
After a storm like June 2025, the trees that worry us most are not always the ones on the ground. A tree that twisted hard in the wind can have cracks inside the trunk or at the main fork that you can't see from the yard. Watch for bark that splits open over the following weeks, leaves that wilt on one side, or a lean that slowly increases. Any of those mean the tree should be checked before it fails on a calm day.

Smyer Questions
My tree lost half its crown in the tornado. Can it be saved?
It depends on the trunk and roots. If the trunk is sound and the tree isn't leaning, corrective pruning can sometimes rebuild a crown over a few years. If the trunk is split or the roots moved, removal is the safer choice.
Should I wait to see if a stripped tree leafs out?
If it's standing straight and the trunk is intact, yes. Many trees stripped by wind or hail send out new leaves within weeks. Remove only broken and hanging branches in the meantime.
Do you handle insurance paperwork?
We provide a written, itemized estimate and invoice that you can send to your insurer. Coverage decisions are between you and your insurance company.
How soon can storm-damaged trees be removed?
Call (806) 855-8442 as soon as it is safe to do so, and tell us whether anything is on a roof, a vehicle or a line. Trees on structures are handled first, and every job gets a written price before cutting starts.
