Old Plantings on the Edge of the Plains

Requests for Tree Service in Ralls tend to involve trees that have been in place for a very long time. Ralls was laid out in July 1911 by John Robinson Ralls, and many of the trees around its older homes went in during the decades after. Trees on the High Plains grow slowly and live hard lives. By the time they're big enough to shade a house, they usually carry some dead wood, old wounds or weak forks that need attention.

Between the plains and the canyons

Ralls sits on the level Llano Estacado in Crosby County, between Lorenzo to the west and Crosbyton to the east. The Caprock Escarpment drops off about 14 miles south, and Blanco Canyon, where Spanish explorers are believed to have camped in 1541, is nearby. Up on the flat ground, wind runs across open cropland. A station one mile southeast of Ralls measured a 62 mph gust on February 17, 2026.

Tornado season

In late April 2025, the National Weather Service received a tornado report from the Ralls area during a multi-day outbreak across the South Plains and Rolling Plains. It was one of several that weren't formally surveyed. Ralls doesn't need a direct hit for its trees to suffer. Severe straight-line winds from those same storms are what break most limbs and topple most trees.

What we do in Ralls

  • Removing large dead trees before they fall on homes or cars
  • Pruning out dead limbs and weak forks in old shade trees
  • Storm cleanup, including split trunks and hanging limbs
  • Cutting back trees from roofs, gutters and service drops
  • Grinding stumps left behind by removals
  • Tree work around farm shops, barns and equipment yards

Is a dead tree an emergency?

A dead tree in an open spot is a problem to schedule, not an emergency. A dead tree leaning toward a house, a driveway or a street is different. Dead wood dries out and gets brittle, and on the High Plains it can stand for years before one gust brings it down. If a dead tree could hit something important, put it near the top of the list.

Getting the price right

Rural jobs vary. Some have easy truck access and open ground to drop the tree. Others are wedged between a house and a shop. We look at all of that on site and put it in a written estimate, so the price you see is the price for the job.

Keeping the good trees

Not every old tree in Ralls needs to come down. A tree with a sound trunk and a few dead limbs can often be cleaned up and kept for many more years. Removing deadwood, shortening limbs that reach too far over the roof, and taking out crossing branches is often enough. We'll be straight about whether a tree is worth that investment.

Ralls Questions

How long can a dead tree stand before it falls?

It varies. In the dry High Plains climate, a dead tree can stand for years, but its wood gets more brittle every season. If it could hit a house, a vehicle or a road, have it taken down on your schedule instead of the weather's.

Do you work on farms around Ralls?

Yes. We work in town and on farmsteads in the surrounding part of Crosby County, including tree work near barns, shops and equipment.

Can you remove a tree that's between my house and a shop?

Yes. Tight spaces mean we take the tree down in pieces and lower them with ropes instead of felling it whole. The estimate reflects how much rigging the job needs.

Do you grind stumps after removing a tree?

Yes, if you want it. Stump grinding is quoted as a separate line so you can choose. We grind below grade so the area can be filled and seeded, and we can haul the grindings or leave them as mulch.
