Taking Care of the Shade in a Ginning Town
Our Tree Service in New Home is built for a small town where everybody knows everybody's trees. New Home is a city of about 326 people on one square mile in northwest Lynn County. It grew out of the old Deuce of Hearts Ranch, part of which was platted and opened to settlement in the 1890s. Farming began between 1905 and 1910, and by the 1930s there was a real town. The co-op gin processed 12,000 bales of cotton in 1985.
Wind strong enough to break trees
On the evening of June 6, 2025, a West Texas Mesonet station at New Home recorded an 80 mph gust. That's well above the speed where large limbs break and weak trees go over. The same evening brought hail as large as 3.25 inches to the area west of Wilson, a few miles to the east. Storms like that are the main reason trees here need regular attention.
Roots and the hard layer below
New Home sits at about 3,238 feet on the High Plains. USDA's description of the Amarillo soil series, sampled in Lynn County and common across the Southern High Plains, shows deep sandy loam over clay loam, with carbonate building up starting around 18 to 40 inches down. Tree roots spread wide in the upper layers. Trenching, new slabs and heavy equipment near a trunk can sever the roots a tree depends on to stay upright in an 80 mph gust.
New Home tree work
- Taking down dead and dangerous trees
- Pruning deadwood and long, heavy limbs
- Clearing storm debris from yards and drives
- Removing trees that crowd houses, garages and shops
- Stump grinding
- Tree work on farmsteads and around gins and shops
Planning tree work around harvest
Farm families around New Home are busiest in the fall. If you have tree work that can wait, late winter, after harvest and before spring growth, is a good time. Trees are dormant, branch structure is easy to see, and pruning cuts heal fast once the tree starts growing in spring. Dangerous trees, of course, shouldn't wait.
Building in protection
If you're building a shop or pouring a slab near an established tree, call before you dig. Keeping heavy equipment and trenches outside the tree's drip line protects the roots that hold it up. We can mark which roots matter and suggest where the work can go.
Spotting trouble from the ground
You can catch most tree problems yourself before they become emergencies. Walk around each large tree twice a year and look for dead branches with no leaves or bark, cracks or seams in the trunk, mushrooms or soft wood at the base, and new leaning. If you see any of these near your house, drive or shop, call us for a look. The visit and estimate cost nothing.

New Home Questions
When is a good time to schedule non-urgent tree work in New Home?
Late winter, after harvest and before spring growth, works well for most pruning. Dead or dangerous trees should be handled whenever you notice them.
Can I build a shop near my big tree without killing it?
Often, if you keep trenches, slabs and heavy equipment away from the main root zone. We can look at the site and point out which roots the tree depends on.
Do you remove trees around gins and farm shops?
Yes. Trees near buildings and equipment are taken down in sections so nothing lands where it shouldn't.
Do you charge extra to come to New Home?
No. New Home is part of our Lynn County area, and the written estimate is based on the tree work, access and cleanup.
