Hail Country East of Lubbock

Tree Service in Lorenzo often follows hail. In June 2025, golf-ball-size hail, 1.75 inches across, fell on Lorenzo twice in three days: on the night of June 6 and again early on June 8, according to National Weather Service reports. Hail like that strips leaves, bruises bark and snaps small twigs, and it can leave a tree looking far worse than it is. Part of our job after a hailstorm is telling people which trees will bounce back and which have real damage.

What hail does to a tree

Most healthy trees push out a second set of leaves within a few weeks of losing the first. The damage that matters is on the bark: large wounds on the upper side of branches where hail hit hardest, and split bark on young trunks. Those wounds can let decay in. We usually suggest waiting until the tree has re-leafed, then removing branches that stayed bare and checking the trunk for open wounds.

Lorenzo in brief

Lorenzo is in western Crosby County, 20 miles east of Lubbock and 17 miles west of Crosbyton. It incorporated on April 2, 1924, and had 964 residents in 2020. US 62 and US 82 run through town alongside State Highways 114 and 378. Cotton is the main crop, with wheat, soybeans and milo grown nearby.

Wind and twisters

On May 1, 2024, a weak rope tornado was reported about six miles north of Lorenzo, and winds flipped several center pivots north of town. Storms that can tip a pivot can also split old trees around farmhouses. Trees that are already hollow, dead on top or leaning are the ones to deal with first.

Our Lorenzo work

  • Cleanup of broken limbs after hail or wind
  • Pruning to remove dead branches and reduce weight
  • Removing trees with trunk decay or root damage
  • Clearing branches off roofs, fences and drives
  • Stump grinding after removals
  • Farmstead tree work, including old windbreak trees

Should a hail-battered tree come out?

Rarely right away. Unless a trunk is split or a large limb is hanging, give the tree a few weeks. If it puts out new leaves across most of the crown, it is probably fine with some pruning. If large parts stay bare into midsummer, those sections may be dead and should come out before they fall.

Trees that shield homes

Around Lorenzo, trees planted on the north and west sides of a house help block winter wind and blowing dust. When one of those trees declines, owners face a real choice. Removing it all at once opens the house to weather; reducing it and planting a replacement nearby keeps some shelter while the new tree grows. We'll lay out both paths.

Lorenzo Questions

Hail stripped my tree bare. Is it dead?

Probably not. Healthy trees usually put out new leaves within a few weeks. Wait to see what re-leafs before cutting, then remove only the branches that stay bare.

Do you come out to Lorenzo from Lubbock?

Yes. Lorenzo is about 20 miles east on US 62/82 and is part of our regular area. We also cover farms and homes on the county roads around it.

What should I do first after a storm drops a tree on my house?

Get everyone out of the damaged area, stay away from any wires, and call your electric provider if lines are down. Then call (806) 855-8442 and we'll set up the removal and give you a written price.

Can young trees recover from hail damage to the bark?

Often, yes. Small wounds close over within a season or two on a vigorous young tree. Large patches of torn bark on a thin trunk are more serious, because they can girdle the tree. We can look and tell you whether it is worth keeping or better to replant.
